Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, we are limiting this year's new applications to engineering, computer science, and atmospheric science using lidar.
Please note that this year's nine-week program from June to August is contingent on the COVID-19 situation and forecast in late-spring and could get cancelled if necessary for the health and safety of the participants and the Observatory staff.

Students and Teachers selected for the program will work with staff scientists on projects related to ongoing research or instrumentation development. Students will be exposed to the interdisciplinary character of this unique research facility through lectures by the staff and visiting scientists, seminar series, tours of the observatory facilities and frequent informal discussions with staff and scientists. Students are also expected to have the opportunity to conduct hands-on observing with the 305-m telescope.

On Friday, August 3, the students from the summer program Research Experience for Undergraduates & Teachers, better known as REUT, presented their work to their mentors and the rest of the Arecibo Observatory (AO) staff. It’s amazing how much you can learn in ten weeks. MATLAB went from being this weird uncomfortable program to one I’m proficient in. I now know about the history of the Arecibo Telescope, from sinkhole to world-class telescope, with line feeds and super-complicated optics. I almost understand galactic HI observations. I had never heard of LIDAR before, and now I can explain what it does. (Looks at the ionosphere from 80-100 km with pretty lasers.) My Spanish proficiency doubled, as did my knowledge of statistics. I’ve become more comfortable using command lines and troubleshooting code. I learned about the Saturn system and the Cassini mission. I’m now much better at explaining and presenting my research.Read more
